Manufacturing

Materials
The CapeHorn Integrated Self-Steering System is made of 316L stainless steel tube and rod. The steering oar is now made of fiberglass but a teak paddle can still be ordered on request. The steering oar bushings are made of Teflon . Other plastic parts are Delrin, Nylatron and UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight polymer). The light air windvane is nylon spinnaker cloth over stainless wire and the heavy weather vane is an anodized aluminum blade. Weight (of standard model)  is about 35 pounds for the Jean-du-Sud and Varuna and about 55 for the Spray and Joshua.

Each Unit Custom Built
In order to provide the best integration possible between the windvane and the boat, the dimensions of each segment is fabricated according to measures provided by the client : the length of the horizontal axis (LMT), the height of the windvane tower, and the size of the servo-pendulum.

Scantlings
Likewise, the wall thickness of the tubes used in construction is in proportion with the size and displacement of each boat. When maximum strength is needed, a thicker wall is used; conversely, if weight needs to be saved, a thinner tube will be  used.
The CapeHorn is over-built. The wall of all stress-bearing tubes can be a maximum 1/8" (3 mm ) thick (11 GA). The horizontal control axle is made of a tube 1.9" (48 mm ) OD on Jean-du-Sud , and 2.5" (63 mm ) on Spray .
The steering oar stock is 1 '' dia. with wall of 3/16" (4.75 mm ) on JdS and Varuna , and is 1.25'' dia. with wall of 1/4" (6.35 mm ) on Spray and Joshua. The stocks can be made of solid bar on request.

 CapeHorn Marine Products
CapeHorn Marine Products was formed in July 1989, to develop and manufacture the self-steering system Yves Gélinas designed and so conclusively tested around the world by way of the Southern Ocean and Cape Horn.
The manufacturing plant is in Oka, Québec. Oka is 50 km west of Montréal on the North shore of the Ottawa River. Yves Gélinas takes care of the marketing, Éric Sicotte manages production.

Guarantee

Before we ship each CapeHorn Integrated Self-Steering System, we are positively satisfied that we would personally use it to sail around the world.

This is why each CapeHorn unit is guaranteed for one circumnavigation, 28 000 miles or four years against damage done by the sea or the wind.

Each gear is shipped complete with mounting brackets, but without blocks or control lines (wich would be different in number or type on each boat).

Jean-du-Sud and the Magick-Byrd,
the book by Yves Gélinas that narrated his 28 000 mile single-handed circumnavigation through the Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn aboard Alberg 30 Jean-du-Sud, has been translated in English and published by Andy Schell and Mia Karlsson of 59 North Sailing.

It was first published in French in Canada in 1986, then in France in 1996.

Available both in print, and as a podcast,
